It’s National Lipstick day, so I am sharing my tips on how to apply lipstick. Create healthy looking lips and prepare your lips for a wedding or event, to keep them looking smooth. I share great tips on how to make lipstick long lasting.

Lip Care

There are many factors affecting the skin on the lips. How much you drink and hydration have an overall impact on your skin including your lips. The weather can also, dry out your lips. There are some go to lip care products. that I use time and time again. They contain naturally derived ingredients. I find ingredients such as petroleum and mineral oils, dry out the lips further. They sit on the surface of your lips making your lipstick prone to coming off easily. My favourite is a ceremide lip silk it also has a plumping affect on the lips. Ideal if your looking to boost your lip shape.

Lip Scrub

Keeping your lips smooth will help prevent your lipstick catching in any dry patches. Any dry patches can potentially stand out. Gently buff the lips with a scrub. There’s lots of great formulars available. Exfoliating the lips will help them look plump to and remove any flaky, dead skin. Try this recipe to create your own scrub for your lips. Decant some of your favourite balm into a pot and mix with sugar. Then gentle rub on your lips.

Another way to remove dead skin from the lips is to switch to a face cloth. Gently rub a damp face cloth over your lips daily to gently remove dead skin and excess product build up. Your lipstick will glide over your lips and will look amazing. Doing this once a week will help stop the build up of dry cracked skin. Avoid using a wipe to remove your lip scrub. Although convenient, they contain alcohol, which will end up drying your lips out and undo your hard work. Apply a light balm after to rehydrate and let it soak in for a few minutes. Using balms without petroleum based ingredients will help absorption and are less likely to cause your lipstick to come off quickly.

Lip Liners

A step to creating long lasting lipstick is to use a lip liner. Firstly, sharpen your pencil. For a natural look, use a liner that’s a similar shade to your natural lip tone. If your lipstick fades, you won’t be left with a tell tale line on the outer edge of your lips.

Also, you can even up your lips by tracing your pencil slightly over your natural lip line. Take the pencil slightly over the natural lip carefully. If you have a small upper lip use this tip the exact same way to give a fuller look. Use the pencil in small feather strokes carefully, starting from the middle of lip working towards the outer corners. Avoid using long heavy lines. Line your lips all over. As a result, this will create a great base for your lipstick to adhere to. To intensify lip colour, by all means, use a pencil that is a good match with your lipstick. A soft lip pencil will work better for drier lips. To avoid downturned lips keep the liner soft on the outer corners of the lips.

Lipstick

Lipsticks come in many finishes and so you’ll need to choose one that you prefer. As a guide, matt tends to be flat and non-reflective, overall delivering an intense depth. It is likely to show the texture of your lips. Taking care of your lips is essential as matt lipsticks can also have a drying effect. That is to say that they have staying power and nonetheless will last a long time. Lip stains have the same effect on the finish of the lips.

A cream finish of lipstick will give light reflection. This formular can appear to make the lips look fuller. It also tend not to be as drying on the lips, usually offering moisturising properties. Even though cream lipsticks have a good colour payoff. It will be less intense than a matt or lip stain. A sheer lipstick will have less colour depth which is great for a natural finish.

You may benefit from applying your lipstick with a lip brush. A brush will create a thin layer, that is buildable and allow further precision. So would be more beneficial for an occasion where your looking to create a lasting effect. The other benefit of using a brush is that you can carefully alter the shape of your lips. Correcting a downturn or uneven lip shape. Ultimately you can just swipe over your lips from the stick itself if you prefer. Either way works perfectly well. Blotting excess lipstick with a single layer of tissue to remove excess. Then reapplying another layer to finish. Use lip gloss if you prefer, this gives a wash of colour, usually with a glossy finish. Gloss over the top of a lipstick is also a nice combination. The light reflection from a gloss can give the appearance of fuller lips.

In summary, following my steps to care and prep the lips will help create longevity to your lipstick. Caring for your lips will create a long lasting lip effect.
